The Catholic community in the United States and many Nigerians have been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of a Nigerian Catholic priest, Reverend Father Benjamin Okwy Madu, who reportedly died by suicide in the United States.

Father Benjamin, fondly called Father Ben by parishioners, passed away on the evening of Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the age of 54. He was a native of Abor in Enugu State, Nigeria.

His death has generated widespread sadness, particularly because it came just weeks before he was expected to return to Nigeria after his religious visa reached its expiration, bringing his pastoral assignment in the United States to an end.

According to reports, Father Ben had expressed deep disappointment over the impending return. In what has now become a heartbreaking farewell message published in his parish newsletter only days before his death, he reflected on the emotional pain of leaving a community that had become home to him.

> “Sincerely, it is not my wish to return home right now, but circumstances beyond my control have warranted that my time in the United States come to an end. My heart is broken, yet my joy remains. I will miss the home I found away from home. I will deeply miss the seaside, where I often drive to after Mass to call my family and hear about their Sundays.”

The late priest was also just days away from celebrating a significant milestone—his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination, which would have been marked on July 7, 2026.

Father Ben began serving the Catholic Community of Gloucester and Rockport in April 2022, where he ministered as an assistant priest during weekend Masses at Holy Family Parish and Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish. Beyond parish ministry, he also served as a priest-chaplain at Salem Hospital, offering spiritual support and comfort to patients and their families.

Parishioners have described him as a compassionate, humble, and joyful priest whose warm smile and heartfelt homilies touched countless lives. Many recalled his unwavering dedication to the Church and his pastoral care for those in need.

The circumstances surrounding his death have reignited conversations about mental health, emotional well-being, and the pressures that can affect even those in religious ministry. While reports indicate that Father Ben struggled emotionally over his impending departure from the United States, the exact reasons behind his decision remain known only to him, and it would be inappropriate to conclude that the visa issue alone caused his death.

His passing serves as a sobering reminder that emotional pain is not always visible and that anyone, regardless of vocation or status, may need compassion, understanding, and support.

CoolNews Nigeria extends heartfelt condolences to Father Benjamin Okwy Madu’s family, the Catholic Diocese, his fellow clergy, and the parishioners whose lives he faithfully served. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
