National Grid Collapse Plunges Nigeria into Widespread Blackout

Nigeria experienced a nationwide power outage on Wednesday following a collapse of the national electricity grid. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice issued via its official X handle, stating that the blackout, which began at 11:23 a.m., was caused by a sudden loss of supply from the national grid

Data from the Independent System Operator revealed that power generation plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts to a mere 1.5 megawatts between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., effectively bringing the grid to a halt .

The outage affected multiple regions across the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger State, Kogi State, and Nassarawa State, all under AEDC’s franchise. Other distribution companies, such as Eko DisCo, Enugu DisCo, Ikeja DisCo, and Port Harcourt DisCo, reported zero megawatt allocations during the collapse .

In a statement, AEDC assured customers that efforts are ongoing to stabilize the grid and restore power. “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized,” the company stated .

This incident marks the third grid collapse in Nigeria this year, highlighting persistent challenges in the country’s power infrastructure. Frequent blackouts are often attributed to aging infrastructure, vandalism, and inadequate gas supply for thermal plants, which account for over 75% of Nigeria’s power generation .

As of press time, restoration efforts are underway, with authorities urging patience from the public as they work to bring the national grid back online.
