
Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has announced several strategic appointments to federal university governing councils and leadership positions, signaling continued reforms in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
New Governing Council Members
In a move to strengthen university governance, the President appointed Chisom Obih to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. This appointment comes following the recent death of a council member.
Additionally, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, a distinguished communications expert, has been named to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. The appointment was confirmed Tuesday in a statement by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga.
Prof. Akinfeleye brings impressive credentials to his new role. The former University of Lagos Mass Communication Department head also chairs the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography, overseeing Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television operations. He previously served on Yakubu Gowon University of Abuja’s governing council and replaces Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, who recently became Pro-Chancellor of Federal University of Transport, Daura.

President Tinubu also unveiled a complete leadership team for the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State:
Vice Chancellor: Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai
Registrar: Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa
Bursar: Usman Nakazalle Sanusi
Librarian: Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman
Spotlight on New Vice Chancellor
Prof. Yakasai’s appointment represents a significant addition to Nigeria’s university leadership. The retired Army Colonel currently serves as Provost of Bayero University’s College of Health Sciences in Kano and chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine nationwide.
His academic journey began with an MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before earning a European Economic Commission scholarship for UK postgraduate studies. There, he achieved membership and fellowship with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Further expanding his expertise, Prof. Yakasai earned a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Winchester and pursued advanced fellowships in the United States, including the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons.
His administrative experience includes serving as Director-General of Kano State’s Hospitals Management Board and current membership on the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo governing council.
These appointments reflect the administration’s commitment to placing experienced leaders at the helm of Nigeria’s federal universities as the sector continues evolving to meet contemporary educational challenges.
