The Ondo State Government has launched a formal investigation into the mysterious death of Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran, the registrar of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, who was found dead outside his Akure residence several weeks ago.
State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, has formally requested a coroner’s inquest to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Adeniran’s death, which police have classified as an assassination.
Suspicious Circumstances Prompt Official Inquiry
In a letter to Chief Judge Justice Segun Odusola, Ajulo emphasized that the deceased “had been widely reported to have died under questionable circumstances,” necessitating a thorough investigation to establish whether criminal responsibility exists.
“In the public interest, a formal coroner’s inquest is necessary to ascertain the cause and manner of the death and to determine if any individual may bear criminal responsibility,” the attorney general stated in his official request.
Coroner Appointed to Lead Investigation
Responding to the request, Chief Judge Honourable Justice Olusegun Ayedun Odusola has appointed Dr. Dickson Ogunfuyi, Chief Magistrate and Head of the Ondo State Multi-Door Court, to serve as coroner for the case.
The inquest will be conducted under the provisions of the Coroners Law of Ondo State, with Ajulo assuring the public that proceedings will maintain “full transparency and adherence to due process.”
Police Confirm Assassination
State Police Public Relations Officer Olayinka Ayanlade has confirmed the case as a homicide, providing chilling details about the attack.
“I can confirm to you that the man was killed. From the information I have at my disposal, two men came out of the bush, and they forced a substance into another person’s mouth,” Ayanlade revealed, though he declined to specify the exact location of the incident.
The police spokesman emphasized that investigators are focused on identifying those responsible for Adeniran’s death.
University Community in Shock
The death of the university registrar has sent shockwaves through the academic community in Ondo State, with questions mounting about the motive behind the apparent targeted killing.
