In what appears to be Nigeria’s biggest financial recovery in recent history, confidential findings from the Office of the Special Investigator have exposed an intricate web of alleged corruption involving former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officials and top aides of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
Emefiele Reportedly Returns ₦4 Trillion and Six Banks
According to impeccable insider sources, the former CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has refunded an astonishing ₦4 trillion to the Federal Government’s account. Investigators also allege that Emefiele relinquished ownership of six commercial banks secretly linked to him through layers of corporate fronts and proxies.
The findings stem from an ongoing probe led by the Special Investigator, Mr. Jim Osayande Obazee, who was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to scrutinize the activities of the apex bank and related financial institutions during Emefiele’s tenure.
CBN Deputy Governor Allegedly Returns $500 Million
In a related twist, a former CBN Deputy Governor, Mr. Tunde Lemo, was also said to have refunded about $500 million, allegedly traced to embezzled public funds and misused CBN allocations.
Sources close to the investigation describe the recoveries as “just the beginning,” suggesting that the scale of alleged corruption during the previous administration may be far deeper than earlier suspected.
$275 Million Found in Account of Six-Year-Old Linked to Buhari’s Aide
Perhaps the most shocking discovery yet involves a $275 million deposit in the bank account of a six-year-old boy, reportedly the son of Sabiu ‘Tunde’ Yusuf, a former Personal Assistant to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
Documents sighted by CoolNews Nigeria indicate that the funds were lodged in a new-generation bank and traced during the audit of suspicious accounts connected to the Presidential Villa.
Further investigation also uncovered ₦1.5 trillion allegedly traced directly to the personal accounts of Sabiu Yusuf, described by insiders as one of the most influential figures in the Buhari government.
“The Special Investigator and his committee discovered $275 million in an account belonging to the six-year-old son of Sabiu Yusuf,” a source disclosed.
“Another ₦1.5 trillion was traced to Yusuf himself, whose influence during Buhari’s tenure shielded many financial dealings from scrutiny,” the source added.
Tinubu Reportedly Negotiating Quiet Refunds
Highly placed sources within the presidency told CoolNews Nigeria that President Bola Tinubu has been engaging some influential Nigerians to quietly negotiate the return of looted funds allegedly linked to certain individuals from the last administration, to prevent political fallout and public scandal.
This revelation comes weeks after National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, openly lamented that the Tinubu government inherited a “bankrupt nation” due to the massive looting and financial mismanagement of previous years.
Over ₦12 Trillion Already Recovered
So far, the Obazee-led investigation is said to have recovered over ₦12 trillion, a large portion of which was allegedly siphoned by former government officials, political insiders, and CBN executives.
Reliable sources confirm that the committee has rejected several multi-million-dollar bribe offers, underscoring the depth of resistance facing the recovery process.
Nigerians Demand Transparency
As at press time, official responses from the Presidency, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the individuals named in the ongoing investigation were yet to be made public.
Civil society groups and public commentators have, however, begun demanding transparency, prosecution, and publication of the recovered funds, insisting that justice must not end at quiet refunds but with full accountability.
